Are you excited for your trip to Wanaka? It’s such a beautiful and fun destination – but don’t get so overwhelmed that you forget to pack properly!

Here’s our ultimate packing checklist of things you can’t forget when visiting Wanaka during summer.

1. The essentials

You’d be surprised (or maybe you wouldn’t) at how many people forget to pack the basics like underwear or a toothbrush. It’s understandable (you’re probably busy ensuring you have the right gear for all those fun activities) but it can be frustrating when you arrive sans essential items. The first things that should go into your suitcase are the most forgotten items:

  1. Underwear
  2. Toothbrush/paste
  3. Brush or comb
  4. Phone charger/power adapter
  5. Swimsuits
  6. Passport/identification

2. Hiking gear

Okay, now we’re moving on to the Wanaka-specific stuff and first things first: hiking gear.

The South Island of New Zealand is famous for its scenic hikes, and Wanaka has over 750 kilometres of trails, which are some of the best in the country. Make sure to bring adequate gear for the tracks that interests you. The following hiking gear is considered standard:

    1. Hiking boots/sturdy trainers
    2. Layers of cotton based clothing
    3. Water bottle
    4. Sunscreen
    5. A hat/sunglasses

3. Water gear

There are tons of activities to do once you get down to Lake Wanaka besides swimming (you can swim at the resort too!). Be prepared for activities like snorkelling, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, boating and jet-boating. Or, you know, just enjoying a quiet, lakeside picnic. Don’t forget to pack these essentials for a day by the water:

  1. Bathing suit
  2. Wetsuit
  3. Water shoes
  4. Snorkelling gear
  5. Beach towel
  6. Sunscreen
  7. Sunglasses
  8. Insect repellent

4. Camera/GoPro

Wanaka makes an idyllic backdrop for a nice family photo, so you’ll want to have a nice camera to capture a high-quality picture for the family photo album. But, bring your GoPro too to help capture the more extreme activities. We’re talking everything from horse-riding and canyoning to skydiving and parasailing. So, to reiterate, you will need the following for capturing all the fun-filled activities you’ll be doing in Wanaka:

  1. Camera
  2. GoPro
  3. A sense of adventure

Now you’re officially ready to head on your holiday. What are you waiting for? Get packing!
