Nestled between Indonesian islands Sumatra and Bali, Java is one of Indonesia’s largest islands. From spectacular scenery, iconic temples and tea plantations- Java has it all.
Climb Mount Bromo to watch a spectacular sunrise, buy some traditional batik clothing along the Malioboro Road in Yogyakarta and visit the Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Central Java. Immerse yourself in Indo-Javanese architecture as you travel around the island and observe the unique artistic traditions of each city and village.
Visit Solo, the historic royal capital of Java, often referred to as Surakarta. While you’re there, go and see the 18th century Puri Mangkunegaran Palace, which is still to this day a royal residence where you will find spectacular dresses, masks and jewellery on display from the personal collection of Mangkunegara VII. To learn more about Solo’s history, call in to the Kraton (Palace) Surakarta and the Sasono Sewoko museum. The city is also a perfect launching pad to explore the lush, mountainous countryside of Central Java.
Travel further East of Java to Surabaya, the second largest city on the island after Jakarta. Referred to by locals as Kota Pahlawan (the City of Heroes), Surabaya is a port city which was once a trading hub for the various inland empires in Java. Take in all the traditional buildings as you stroll around the city, as many date from the Dutch colonial period. Learn about Surabaya’s history at the various museums or visit one of the super modern Malls dotted around the City for a spot of shopping.
